Augmented reality and food education: how to learn about food by playingFebruary 27, 2019
The continuous research in the field of medical technology has been showing satisfying results: innovation does not just concern medical equipment, but also new technologies thanks to which more and more lives are being saved or considerably extended.
Healthcare and the Internet of Things
Despite still being an unclear concept for many people, IoT is around us more than we realize: it is actually connecting everything!
And it’s not just the revolutionary Alexa, which is making homes smart: ever heard of digital watches that tell you how many steps you take every day, or your heart rate? That’s IoT as well, and it’s evolving faster than we could imagine.
When applied to medicine, IoT can be of great help to doctors and patients all over the world: for example, constantly monitoring a person’s specific health feature is an expensive, time-consuming activity, and it often requires a bulky equipment and regular visits to a doctor or to the hospital; this medical technology can improve all these features, by calculating average data, communicating them directly to the patient’s structure of reference and giving the doctor a constant update on this person’s conditions, including alerts in the case of an alarming swing.
But this is not IoT’s only use, and the world is starting to feel it: according to SearchHealthIT
, just thanks to three of the many possible applications of the Internet of Things - inventory management, workflow optimization and medical device integration - this market will reach $136.8 billion worldwide by 2021!
Blockchain as a medical technology
For many, blockchain is still a mystery. Bitcoins? Cryptocurrencies? Data protection? Some people are still skeptical, other firmly believe that this technology belongs to the future - the one thing they have in common is that they are all curious about what they have heard, read or studied about it.
As we have previously asserted, blockchain is a database distributed among millions of users in the world, where a series of transactions are recorded
; since each computer connected to the network automatically receives a copy of the registry, it is possible to keep track of the transactions between two parties in a verifiable, secure way. These transactions can consist of any kind of data - including the patients’ medical information, which, as all private data, is worth billions and is longed for by big companies: this is why its protection through blockchain could prevent data thefts and ensure a safe, traceable communication between patients, doctors and structures.
This medical technology’s traceability can also allow to record and monitor each stage of the distribution process of sanitary and pharmaceutical equipment, preventing falsification and non-compliance with national obligations.
Augmented and Mixed Reality: from theory to practice
We talked about these technologies many times, and yet there is always something new to say: we have already explored the interesting applications of Mixed and Augmented Reality in education
, including the possibility to simulate lessons and operations - thus giving students the opportunity to be as close to an actual patient as possible, anytime they want without harming anyone.
In the case of patients with phobias, mixed reality can make them face their fears with an immersive experience, guided by expert doctors that will help them with their disease.
This technology can also guide surgeons by giving them thorough directions during particularly complex procedures - and so much more.
The ones we talked about in this article are not the only technologies that can (and are beginning to) improve the healthcare system all over the world - scientists and researchers are studying every single possibility of exploiting medtech for a better future.
