What is the Internet of Food and why do we need it?November 22, 2018
The use of technologies such as augmented reality brings many advantages and benefits in many areas.Among all, the tourism sector is the one that can use it to give to travelers and explorers of all ages a new and innovative way of experiencing museums and cities, improving and enriching their visit experience like never before.
Augmented reality to support tourism
In the last decade, the smartphone has become one of our most loyal tourist guide and fellow travelers.
Given the growing number of digital apps and services that we rely on to make the experience of the place more enjoyable and simplify the organization of a trip, it is easy for us to understand how the companies and institutions of the sector that want to succeed in this changing scenario can not keep up with the technological progress made by the big and the competitors.
Among the many technologies available at the moment, the one that seems to have all the characteristics to inform us, to amaze and to get excited - even during a trip - is undoubtedly augmented reality.
Let’s see together in the next few paragraphs 5 examples of how this technology can improve our traveler experience.
More information, more involvement
As we have said so many times, augmented reality adds digital content to the real world.
Thanks to it, for example, together with the Eiffel Tower we can also visualize, through the smartphone and in real time, animated tags and additional information on the monument in front of us: from technical details, such as height, to multimedia content like vintage images, to spectacular video reconstructions of the inauguration of 1889.
One specific example is that of the Project ARM app
we designed that is able to bring to life the artworks and monuments of museums and cities that we meet during our tours.
Once the object of interest is scanned - form example a statue, an archaeological site, a painting or a mural - it will be possible to admire its peculiarities, discover hidden stories, have fun with extraordinary special effects or even "travel in time" to find the author “in person”- or rather his holographic 3D reconstruction - intent on describing his work and the curiosities behind its realization.
In short, with augmented reality the possibilities to increase in an engaging way the history of the place you are visiting are practically endless.
Guided and customized paths in AR
Although it is amazing to find on your smartphone display all the interesting attractions to explore nearby with app like Tripadvisor, it can still be difficult to find your way and find the most suitable route to explore the city.
Here then the augmented reality comes to help us again. Thanks to the personalized paths that can be viewed directly on site, even if we know little about the area - or the museum we are visiting - we can see the direction indicators appear - directly superimposed on reality - that will show us in AR the path to follow in order to reach, without problems, the desired place or find suggestions on alternative paths based on our tastes and needs.
Artworks and interactive monuments
Augmented reality reserves unique adventures even when we are looking for very strong emotions.
For example, the PAMM
(Pérez Art Museum Miami), in Florida, has used augmented reality to show how this technology can create new forms of expression. “Mezzbug” and “Terrafish”
are, in fact, the two artworks in AR that PAMM has exhibited to give life to a new interaction with the real environment and visitors and to link in a spectacular and original way the concepts of museum, art and new technologies.
, magic is served!
Gaming in AR: “augmented” entertainment and discovery
As you can easily guess, fun is a key component in a discovery experience.
Think of the younger travelers or a group of friends who don’t want to give up the adventurous part of a trip. If you’ve played Pokémon Go
at least once, then you can imagine how visiting a museum or a city - thanks to augmented reality games - can turn into an unforgettable and one of a kind adventure!
AR treasure hunts, artworks to be found, riddles to solve and treasures to conquer will add a touch of magic that will make it all more engaging, exciting and stimulating.
Innovative services for tourists
And if this is not enough, here is a series of other services that exploit the potential of augmented reality not just to keep up with the times, but above all to improve the tourist offer and the customer experience.
to visualize 3D attractions - found in hotels or around the city - in AR . It will be enough to point the camera of your smartphone towards the image of the monument to see an interactive model, get suggestions on upcoming events scheduled in AR or access the link to buy directly from the app the entrance ticket to admire it live;
Sign language video:
thanks to this revolutionary technology, an artwork or a monument can also be enjoyed by users with disabilities thanks to the availability of interactive video content - more engaging than simple text descriptions - explained in sign language;
Instant Translator in AR: Google
, thanks to the use of augmented reality, is able to provide a translation service, in real time, through a simple scan of the text to be translated - directions, menus or signs - by the camera of the smartphone. Just point the device towards a written text to read immediately its translation in the chosen language.
