Architecture is the art of shaping and creating spaces that can be used for human needs. This discipline has always used the most advanced technologies to fulfill its noble task. In this regard, we want to talk about some of the technological innovations that are most revolutionizing this sector, making it more and more spectacular and fascinating.
Mixed Reality, HoloLens and 3D models
How useful can be for an architect to be able to visualize his/her ideas and projects, immediately perceiving the sense of scale, form and space?
Today, this opportunity is offered by technologies such as Mixed Reality
which, thanks to the use of special wearable devices - such as HoloLens
- allows to mix 3D models
of architectural project with reality, creating a single mixed reality where digital elements interact with the surrounding environment.
Architects and designers who use Mixed Reality can place objects, view them in 3D from different points of view and even start new forms of collaboration.
These innovative technologies allow them to view a project and contribute to its creation even from a distance.
Every professional in the sector - but also those who commission an architectural work or project - can modify and move 3D holographic objects in real time through gestural and vocal commands, speeding up the decision-making process and enjoying immediately a clear vision of the finished work, a vision very close to reality.
Augmented Reality and interior design: the IKEA app
IKEA, the furniture colossus, has been able to understand the importance of these new technologies permitting its customers to "furnish" their homes virtually.
How many of you, when buying an armchair, a table or a sofa, have thought: "Will it match my living room?", "Is not it too small?", "That color will match that of the walls?”.
To meet this need, the Swedish company launched IKEA Place, an Augmented Reality (AR) application that allows users to virtually experience their furniture ideas even before they have purchased furniture.
How does it work? Just point at the room you want to decorate using the camera of your device and then choose from the huge IKEA catalog, sofas, armchairs, furniture and furnishing accessories.
The accurate 3D models of these objects - displayed in full-size scale - thanks to Augmented Reality
(AR) are added on reality, with precise proportions, right at the desired point of the house.
This allows potential customers to choose the most appropriate combination of furniture that best suits their needs.
Virtual Reality for architecture
Also, Virtual Reality is becoming a very important tool for architects and designers (but also for builders and sellers), because it allows to view a building or a design object not on through a monitor, but as if we were immersed into it or if we were in front of it, with the possibility to make changes and see the effects in real time.
Virtual Reality is an intuitive, immersive and engaging way to enter into a project, to walk and maybe change elements of the scene with hands, moving walls or modifying, with a simple gesture, materials, furniture and lighting.
As Jon Brouchoud, architect and founder of Arch Virtual, a study specializing in the use of this technology based in Oregon, explains:
«The enormous advantage of virtual reality is that through sensory immersion we perceive proportions and dimensions in a realistic way, obtaining what is impossible to do through a 2D drawing, which always involves perspective distortions»
Think how beautiful and useful it can be for a client who has commissioned the construction of a house, walk and explore it before it is finished.
The benefits that these technologies offer to clients, architectural firms, engineers and builders are numerous and open up endless scenarios that are waiting to be explored.
